Summary[edit]

Scan probes were changed from a single point with fixed range to multiple overlapping Spheres that can be moved around the system and have variable ranges. To control this a new UI was developed to enable you to position the probes around the area to scan and to get the right level of overlap. As you narrow down the scan result you have to reposition the probes each time you change their ranges.

Frequently the UI works against you when you are in a hurry and you end up with probes that look like they are in the correct position but when you rotate the map they are not. As probing is becoming a core part of the game it would be nice for the modern ship computers to be able to take some of the load on this repetitive task.

Potential Solution[edit]

Allow people to save a number probe patterns (or formations). The implementation should support selecting the active probes to apply the formation to and some way to pick the origin point to form around.

Another nice feature would be to maintain the relative distance between probes when changing multiple probe ranges at once -- note: this has been implemented in Incarna.

Pros[edit]

  • Faster setup of probes
  • Less frustration with manipulating objects in 3d via a 2d interface

Cons[edit]

  • Potentially makes scanning too easy
